The physical installation: "Collective Shadow" is made of scraps of clothing on an iron structure measuring 120x160x7 cm, symbolizing the collective shadow.
In Jung, the collective shadow represents the dark, repressed, or unacceptable aspects unconsciously shared by a social group, a nation, or all humanity.
When projected, it generates scapegoating, hatred, and destructive conflicts. Recognizing and integrating it is essential to avoid totalitarianisms and for collective psychic evolution.
As sadly happened and continues to happen in history.
The collective shadow is at the root of phenomena such as racism, war, and totalitarianism. An authoritarian leader often embodies, according to Jung, the projections repressed by a people.
The Role of the Individual: Transformation is not only political but interior. Acknowledging one’s own part of "evil" or "shadow" prevents feeding the destructive crowd.
The challenge, for Jung, is to turn the confrontation with the shadow from clash to integration, accepting one’s dark side to enrich consciousness.
This work represents the tatters of migrant stories and the fragility of national identity when it hunts for an enemy to assert itself, highlighting how society tends to reject its unwanted parts.
In the first person, I reflect on the hunt for the enemy, incarnated in the unexpected hunt for the migrant, as a projection of our fears and vulnerabilities in a disoriented society.
The installation invites confronting these shadows, transforming fear into dialogue and recognizing the complexity of identity. "Collective Shadow" thus becomes an opportunity for welcome and understanding, emphasizing that we clarify and mend fractures only by embracing our shared humanity.
